ReviewsShawn Woodyard, Different Beat, Indianapolis....it combines the elements of many musics -- jazz, rock, salsa, world music of various kinds to create an effective whole. The members of BeebleBrox have succeeded in creating their own sound. You can hear many influences in their music, but they don't sound quite like anyone else. Cadence Magazine, August 1995, pg. 28 Speaking of cliches, it's encouraging to know that even Bloomington, Indiana, a town that has become a cliche for Midwestern conservatism, can produce jazz on the high level of creativity. BeebleBrox, whatever that means, gives us RawMaterial (B'Brox Productions), which unquestionably means that we needn't write off jazz from the land of cornfields. Tropic Of Capricorn and Sambissimo may be schmaltz, but the other tunes incorporate an exceptional level of creativity, both in terms of composition and instrumentation, jumping from the Spike Jones touch in 'Bob's Century (someone else's waltz)/NO-send it to someone else instead' and the heady, ECM-ish Rabbits Under The Apple Tree to the inventive percussion/acoustic guitar duet, 'Bob's Travelling Rhubarb Salemen'. Whoever Bob is , they should keep him around for future inspiration (Ed. Bob probably doesn't know it, but his out-of-business looking gas station on Bluff Rd, Indiananapolis, visionaryly named 'Bob's Century' has inspired quite some weird ideas). The band's output is so varied in texture that a listener might understandably conclude that each cut was from a different group. The abilities of this nonet may pull them into bigger and better things. Jazziz, November 1995, pg. 105/105 This Indiana-based ensemble came into being nearly 10 years prior
to last summer's recording debut. Immediately noticeable is the CD's
low-budget sound quality. Nevertheless, Sierra
Leone unveils Peter Kienle's spasmodic
guitar runs complemented by Monika Herzig's
Fender Rhodes piano and a festive beat. Although the bass work seems
rhythmically challenged at times, Tropic
Of Capricorn features an impressively lyrical bass solo reflective
acoustic duet, Return
Of The Spirit. Violinist Cathy Morris adds sensitivity to the progressive
jazz workout, Mr. P.K..
Other selections range in style from the Pat-Metheny like track "Belonging" to Bob's
Century which suggests a hallucinatory carousel ride. Unlike most
contemporary jazz groups, BeebleBrox's compositions are expressionistic,
and refreshingly off the beaten path, integrating jazz, rock, classical
and Latin elements. Neophytes no longer, their anticipated second release
could be forthcoming later this year. |
